Animal Farm
د.م. 250 sur 5Spearheaded by pigs, a group of animals in Mr Jones’ Manor Farm rise up in rebellion, aspiring for a life without human control and injustice. However, the ideals of a society that enjoys freedom, equality, and happiness veer to a new form of oppression that is perpetrated by some animals against their barnyard fellow animals. Napoleon, the pig, becomes a tyrant, successfully using propaganda to make the other animals toil more and eat less, and reducing the initial Seven Revolutionary Commandments to a single slogan: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
Published in 1945, Animal Farm is a political satire for which George Orwell uses farm animals as characters. The allegory hints to the Russian revolution of 1917 and the ensuing one-party rule in the Soviet Union. As Lord Acton, the 19thcentury British historian puts it, “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” -

People think that when you want to change your life, you need to think big. But world-renowned habits expert James Clear has discovered another way. He knows that real change comes from the compound effect of hundreds of small decisions: doing two push-ups a day, waking up five minutes early, or holding a single short phone call.
He calls them atomic habits. In this ground-breaking book, Clears reveals exactly how these minuscule changes can grow into such life-altering outcomes. He uncovers a handful of simple life hacks (the forgotten art of Habit Stacking, the unexpected power of the Two Minute Rule, or the trick to entering the Goldilocks Zone), and delves into cutting-edge psychology and neuroscience to explain why they matter.
Along the way, he tells inspiring stories of Olympic gold medalists, leading CEOs, and distinguished scientists who have used the science of tiny habits to stay productive, motivated, and happy. These small changes will have a revolutionary effect on your career, your relationships, and your life.________________________________A NEW YORK TIMES AND SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER’A supremely practical and useful book.’ Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck’James Clear has spent years honing the art and studying the science of habits.

Burmese Days
د.م. 300 sur 5In his novel Burmese Days (1934), George Orwell scrutinizes the contradictions of both Burman and European values, attitudes and aspirations, denouncing the disruptive effects of imperialism. In Kyauktada, upper Burma, Flory, a lonely and rather cowardly British timber merchant, feels alienated and stifled by the Europeans’ conduct and conversations. U Po Kyin, a corrupt, unscrupulous, and extremely powerful Sub-divisional Magistrate, seeks the privilege of becoming the first native member in the European Club, and so he plots to ruin his rival, Dr. Veraswami. Flory commits suicide, for he cannot withstand the humiliation he is publicly subjected to by Ma Hla May, his former Burmese mistress, as part of U Po Kyin’s schemes against the protagonist.
George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903 in British India, and he served in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. He expressly condemns the British imperial system; however, he often exhibits an ambivalent attitude towards it. He died in1950. -

Dracula
د.م. 640 sur 5Dracula ‘There he lay looking as if youth had been half-renewed, for the white hair and moustache were changed to dark iron-grey, the cheeks were fuller, and the white skin seemed ruby-red underneath; the mouth was redder than ever, for on the lips were gouts of fresh blood, which trickled from the corners of the mouth and ran over the chin and neck. Even the deep, burning eyes seemed set amongst the swollen flesh, for the lids and pouches underneath were bloated. It seemed as if the whole awful creature were simply gorged with blood; he lay like a filthy leech, exhausted with his repletion.’

Great Expectations
د.م. 700 sur 5Between the Kent marshes and the intricacies of the London streets and life, Great Expectations brilliantly depicts the vivid recollections of the central character and narrator, Pip, from early childhood and poverty to mature adulthood and prestige, as well as his onesided love story with Estella. Written in the firstperson point of view, and using a retrospective, chronological narration, the novel allows the reader to share not only the protagonist’s physical growth but also his psychological development, from his experience as an orphan taken care of by the goodhearted Joe, his brotherinlaw, to the life of a gentleman. Charles Dickens (18121870) published the novel in its entirety in 1861, highlighting 19th century concerns, namely the Victorian classbased society, class transition, and financial uncertainty, along with the issues of pride, snobbery and loyalty, among others.

Nineteen Eighty-Four
د.م. 700 sur 5Written in 1949, George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four portrays a dreadful futuristic human condition under a repressive regime. The setting is Oceania, where individual free thought is banned. “Big Brother Is Watching You” becomes the moto of dictatorial policies that aim at controlling not only people’s behaviour but also their unorthodox thoughts.
Winston Smith, the protagonist of the story, works for the Ministry of Truth, and his mission consists in revising the country’s history by rewriting newspaper articles to manipulate the population and further repress individual liberties. However, Winston later engages in writing a secret diary in which he starts expressing his desires and yearning for freedom. This punishable “thoughtcrime” leads him to Room 101, where he endures severe “re-education” to readjust his seditious thoughts in such a way that his love for Julia turns into loyalty to Big Brother. -

Sense Sensibility
د.م. 640 sur 5Sense Sensibility Introduction and Notes by Professor Stephen Arkin, San Francisco University.
‘Young women who have no economic or political power must attend to the serious business of contriving material security’. Jane Austen’s sardonic humour lays bare the stratagems, the hypocrisy and the poignancy inherent in the struggle of two very different sisters to achieve respectability.
Sense and Sensibility is a delightful comedy of manners in which the sisters Elinor and Marianne represent these two qualities. Elinor’s character is one of Augustan detachment, while Marianne, a fervent disciple of the Romantic Age, learns to curb her passionate nature in the interests of survival.
This book, the first of Austen’s novels to be published, remains as fresh a cautionary tale today as it ever was.
